Vitamin E and Health

D3, a fat-soluble vitamin, excess amounts of which can be stored in the body’s soft tissue, is available in two forms. Ergo calciferol, the first form, is found in fortified milk, herring, mackerel, tuna, sardines, eggs, cereals, and baked goods. The second form, cholecalciferol, is produced by the body when it is exposed to sunlight. And sunlight is the best source of vitamin D3.

A typical supplemental dose, unless a higher does is approved by a physician, is no more than 600 IU (international units).

Positive Health Effects of Vitamin D3

Vitamin D promotes healthy teeth and bones in children, aids calcium absorption, bone mass building, the prevention of bone loss, and protects against muscle weakness.

Vitamin D3 lowers the risk of colon, breast, and prostate cancers, improves immune system functioning and rheumatoid arthritis, and prevents autoimmune diseases.

Vitamin D3 prevents and treats rickets, post- menopausal osteoporosis and falls and fractures in those at risk for its, corticosteroid-induced osteoporosis, and osteomalacia. The vitamin also treats hypoglycemia, bone disorders, psoriasis, squamous cell cancers, vitiligo, and scleroderma. It is even used to treat Multiple Sclerosis and prevent the development of Type 1 diabetes.

Things to Watch Out For

Children deficient in Vitamin D can develop rickets, a bone-and teeth- deforming disease. In adults, deficiencies are indicated by the presence of osteomalacia, osteoporosis, type 1 diabetes, muscle and bone pain, as well as certain cancers.

An overdose can lead to birth defects, coma, and even death.

Vitamin D Supplements

For those of us living in the northern U.S and in many parts of England, and those restricting their exposure to sunlight, or who have a disorder that decreasing their ability to absorb fats, Vitamin D supplementation is very important.
