Tyrosine - Our Dedicated Guide

Tyrosine is an amino acid that aids in the production of brain chemicals, particularly those that affect moods. These include dopamine, epinephrine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. It also binds free radicals, which are known to cause cell and tissue damage. Lack of tyrosine causes depression, underactive thyroid, low blood pressure, and low body temperature.

Common sources of tyrosine include nuts, chicken, turkey, fish, milk, and milk products. Tyrosine supplements are also available, either in capsule or tablet form. Supplements are best taken in three 500 to 1000 mg doses daily, 30 minutes before meals. They should also be taken with multivitamins to help convert them into brain chemicals. Phenylketonuria

This occurs when the body cannot metabolize phenylalanine, from which tyrosine is formed. It is treated by restricting phenylalanine, which naturally limits tyrosine levels and require direct tyrosine intake. This may be in the form of supplements or tyrosine-rich diets.

Stress

Studies show that tyrosine helps the body cope with and minimize the symptoms of physical and psychological stress. It serves as the building block for epinephrine and norepinephine, which are the main stress-related hormones. It helps relieve emotional reactions to events like surgery, sleep deprivation, and emotional upsets.

Drug detoxification

Tyrosine can also be used to aid conventional treatments for drug abuse, particularly cocaine, caffeine, and nicotine. It is often used with tryptophan and imipramine, and antidepressant drug.

Depression

Studies have shown that depressed patients have low levels of tyrosine, and that increasing tyrosine levels can ease depression symptoms. It is more effective when taken with 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). However, more recent studies have failed to support this claim.

Vitiligo

Vitiligo is characterized by irregular white patches on the skin, caused by a lack of melanin. Tyrosine encourages melanin production, making it an effective treatment for the condition. Phenylalanine, which is converted to tyrosine in the body, can effectively relieve vitiligo when combined with ultraviolet therapy.

Side effects: Common side effects of tyrosine include migraines and gastrointestinal problems. It can also interact negatively with other drugs, such as morphIne, levodopa, appetite suppressants, and antidepressants.

IMPORTANT: Because dietary supplements are not strictly regulated in the US, some tyrosine supplements may contain extenders that can be harmful to your body. Such additives include silica, starch, sugar, and gluten. Make sure your tyrosine supplements are GMP-compliant. This indicates that the product has passed strict quality standards and does not contain harmful chemicals. Also, avoid supplements that have artificial colors or flavers added.
