Natural Sources For Vitamins
|
||
Although we have been talking about
supplements and how beneficial they can be to an individual, the natural
sources for vitamins should not be ignored.
For example natural beta-carotene (the plant form of Vitamin A) has been
proven in tests to be far more effective than its synthetic counterpart.
In a trial involving testing beat-carotene on tumours, the natural version was the main reason tumours actually disappeared while trials on the synthetic version had no effect at all.
This does seem to paint a big picture of
just how important natural vitamins are in our lives.
Where can I find these natural Sources?
To obtain these natural sources, you can either take supplements that use
only natural vitamins (not synthetic) or you can try to get everything that
you need from food that you eat – this is what most people think of when we
say Natural Sources.
It is very difficult indeed to get all the vitamins and minerals from just a
staple diet alone, this is for 2 reasons.
The first is that people living in the western world, have very busy and
lifestyles and ‘eat on the run’ so usually eat a lot of junk food, this
prevents them from living a healthy lifestyle as they eat for convenience
food, and convenience food is fast food.
The second reason is we don’t usually get enough minerals because the
quality of the soil in which crops grow in the current day has been
decreased due to chemicals sprayed. This also then spreads to the
vegetables, which in turn becomes lacking in nutrients.
There has been a study of staple food in Canada, which included potatoes,
tomatoes, apples, and broccoli, etc, The Globe and Mail and CTV news
commissioned this.
Using potatoes as an example, in a study to find out what nutrients the
potato has lost over the last 50 years. This is what was concluded:
• 100% of Vitamin A
• 57% of Vitamin C and Iron
• 28% of Calcium
• 50% of Riboflavin
• 18% of Thiamine
Out of all of the nutrients analysed only niacin levels actually did
increase. The conclusion was very similar for 25 fruits and vegetables under
the same test conditions. Broccoli had a huge reduction in which all
nutrients had significantly declined, surprisingly including niacin.
Figures have been published in scientific journals in the UK including the
British Food Journal.
A professor at the centre for Food Policy explained how our food has been so
degraded that we would now have to eat 8 oranges to get the same amount of
Vitamin A from an orange which our grandparents would have eaten many years
ago.
Eating fruit and vegetables is thought to be the best way to consume our
essential vitamins and minerals; however, the content of our food is
constantly decreasing.
What can I do about it?
There are two things, which you can do; the first is to eat as much organic
fruit and vegetable as possible, as chemicals are not used in this method of
production. Therefore are much higher in Vitamins and Minerals.
However, organic produce is more expensive
as the cost to produce this is also higher, but they do taste so much
better.
The second thing you can do is take a supplement, which is made from nothing
but natural vitamins and minerals.
