MSM—short for methylsulfonylmethane--is a
sulfur compound found in proteins, fresh fruits and vegetables, grains,
fish, and milk. MSM is said to be quickly destroyed when foods are
processed, and is thus made available as a single-ingredient or combined
product. It can come in the oral form of capsules and tablets, or for
application the skin, in gel, cream, or lotion form. The typical MSM
supplement sold in the market is an odorless breakdown product of
DMSO--dimethyl sulfoxide. Below are some of the MSM benefits being claimed

MSM benefits in biochemical actions include the enhancement of bioflavenoids'
and antioxidants' effectiveness. They are also said to combat the
cross-linkage of collagen—aiding in the anti-aging process.

When it comes to mental activity, MSM benefits are said to include increased
mental alertness, focus, and concentration. They are also reported to help
improve moods.
3. Pain relief
Another one of the more popular MSM benefits is the alleviation of pain. It
has been reported that MSM reduces or eliminates the occurrence of back and
leg muscle cramps caused by intense use or inactivity. It is being used by
athletes during competition, as well as those who suffer from rheumatism. It
is also used by those with chronic arthritis, musculoskeletal system
disorders, inflammation pains, and migraine.
4. Beauty
MSM benefits are said to also affect physical beauty. It is said to improve
hair and nails and reduce the appearance of wrinkles which associated with
aging. It also reduces symptoms caused by allergies, such as itching,
respiratory congestion, inflammation, mucoid discharges, and general
discomfort. Some say that MSM also increases the body's ability to
metabolize carbohydrates, produce insulin, and help the liver produce more
choline. It is also claimed to help increase the sped of healing wounds.

Other noted MSM benefits include: reduction of gastrointestinal upset
(lessening symptoms of chronic constipation, diarrhea, hyperacidity, nausea,
epigastric pain,) lessening of inflammation of the mucous membranes,
combating of microbial, parasitic, and fungal problems in the urogenital and
intestinal tracts, and augmentation of immunological competence.
