L-Tyrosine - amino acids

L-Tyrosine is considered to be non-essential amino acid because it is capable of being produced in the body. It is commonly used in the body to create several neurotransmitters that are necessary for healthy cognitive functions.

Dopamine, noradrenalin and adrenaline are neurotransmitters produced by L-Tyrosine.

L-Tyrosine itself is manufacture by phenylalanine. L-Tyrosine can be obtained in small quantities from foods such as seafood, poultry, nuts, seeds, dairy products, bananas, avocados and lima beans. L-Tyrosine plays a critical role in the ability of the brain to pay attention. Individuals with T-Tyrosine deficiencies have been noted to have several health issues.

Specifically, studies have shown low levels of L-Tyrosine result in deficiencies of dopamine, noradrenalin and adrenaline. Attention deficit disorder is believed to be caused by a deficiency in dopamine and norarenaline; which is the result of L-Tyrosine deficiency.

Other advantages of L-Tyrosine include relief from headaches, depression, narcolepsy, and chronic fatigue syndrome. Certain individuals may be more at risk for developing L-Tyrosine deficiencies than others.

Individuals diagnosed with Phenylketonuria, commonly called PKU, are usually more at risk for a deficiency in L-Tyrosine because the disease prevents the body from being able to convert phenylalanine into L-Tyrosine.

It is usually recommended that supplemental use of this amino acid and extra foods containing tyrosine not be combined with anti-depressants. Due to the fact that tyrosine is considered to be a stimulant, individuals with heart conditions, thyroid problems, have Muscular Dystrophy or cancer, should also be extremely cautious about taking supplements containing this amino acid.

Known side effects include anxiety, stomach problems and irritation.

L-Tyrosine supplements come in powder form and tablets. Both supplements should be taken with plenty of water so it is able to be absorbed well by the body. Individuals who eat a well balanced diet may not need additional L-Tyrosine supplements.

Research has shown that there are no additional benefits of L-Tyrosine in people who do not have a deficiency. Consumers who are interested in the health benefits of L-Tyrosine, should take the time to read the labels and ingredient lists of products in order to insure they are getting a quality supplement.

One of the things to look for is additives or fillers that manufacturers may add to increase the weight of the product, but that do nothing to increase nutritional value. It is usually recommended that individuals take L-Tyrosine supplements between meals and with plenty of water. It is typically available in powder and caplet.
