On Herbs for Fertility
|
|||||
Many doctors recommend fertility pills to couples who have difficulty having
children. However, fertility herbs are gaining popularity because they are more
natural and easier to absorb. Herbs for fertility are derived from plant sources
and contain little to no chemicals. This makes them ideal for people who are
allergic to certain medications, or those who have high-risk illnesses such as
diabetes and coronary disease.
Both men and women can take herbs for fertility, but different herbs work for
each sex. Fertility herbs for women include black cohosh, chastetree berry, dong
quai, false unicorn root, licorice, red clover blossoms, and wild yam. For men,
tribulus and saw palmetto are commonly used. Here are a few tips for choosing
the right herbs for fertility:
1. Choose the right form
Herbs for fertility are most effective when fresh, but fresh herbs can be hard
to find. Herbal teas are a good alternative. Most people prefer pill
supplements, which contain concentrates or extracts in tablet or capsule form.
These are less efficient, because they have to be dissolved in the body before
taking effect.
2. Check the labels
There is very little regulation on health products, so it's important to know
what to look for in herbal supplements. A good supplement should include a table
listing all the herbs and nutrients it contains, and the amounts there are in
each dose. Look for one with a stamp saying “USP Dietary Supplement Verified” to
make sure it meets certain safety and quality standards. Labels like
“Scientifically Tested” can be misleading; try calling the company to verify the
test results.
3. Consult your doctor
Although most herbs for fertility are non-prescription, you still need to
consult your doctor to make sure you are getting the right supplements. Be sure
to mention any medications you are currently taking, as some herbs can react
negatively with some chemicals. Also mention any medical conditions that may
affect your medication, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, blood clotting
problems, and a personal or family history of stroke or heart attack. You can
also consult an herbalist or naturopathy specialist for more advice.
IMPORTANT: Dietary supplements are not strictly regulated by the US government.
Some supplements contain chemical additives that not only inhibit medicinal
effects, but can even be harmful to your health. Common additives are silica,
sugar, starch, and gluten. Make sure your fertility supplements are
GMP-certified and do not contain artificial flavors or colors.
