Herbs for Digestion

Herbs are commonly used to treat digestive problems such as constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, and intestinal gas. Many people prefer herbs for digestion over pharmaceutical drugs because they are more natural, easier on the digestive system, and usually have fewer side effects. Herbs may be taken alongside or in place of other digestive aids.

Herbs for digestion are most effective when fresh, but most dried herbs are also effective. They may also be taken as supplements to better control dosage. The following are some common herbs for digestion and their specific uses.

1. Carminative oil

Carminative oils are made from a variety of herbs, usually including caraway, fennel, and peppermint. They are commonly used to prevent spasms and relieve intestinal gas and flatulence. They usually come in essential oil capsules or gel caps.

2. Herbal bitters

Bitter herbs stimulate the metabolic processes necessary for proper digestion liver function. They are used as laxatives or to relieve excess fullness and upset stomachs. Commonly used bitters include dandelion, garlic mustard, and wintercress.

3. Peppermint and fresh ginger tea

Peppermint tea helps reduce bloating, while ginger tea relieves nausea. To make peppermint tea, steep one teaspoon of dried or three teaspoons of fresh peppermint over a cup of boiled water. Ginger tea can be made by simmering one or two teaspoons of ginger (sliced or grated) in a cup of purified water for ten minutes.

4. Fennel Seeds

Fennel seeds may be chewed after meals to aid in digestion and act as mouth fresheners They are also effective against bloating. For recurrent symptoms, chew half a teaspoon of fennel seeds every thirty minutes.

5. Wormwood

Wormwood is one of the most powerful herbs for digestion. It can treat liver and gall bladder problems and intestinal worms. The most common forms are wormwood tincture and wormwood tea. It may also come in oil extracts, which contain toxins that stimulate gall bladder function. Take 10 to 20 drops of tincture mixed in water 15 minutes before each meal. Avoid taking wormwood supplements more than four weeks in a row.

IMPORTANT: Herbs for digestion are considered dietary supplements, and are not strictly regulated in the US. Because of this, some herbal products may contain additives like silica, starch, sugar, or gluten, which may be harmful to your health. Choose only GMP-compliant herbal supplements to make sure they do not contain such chemicals. Also, avoid products with additives such as artificial colors and flavors.

Why not use the best? Your health depends on it.
