Headache Natural Treatments

Headaches are one of the most common symptoms of health problems. They may be caused by external factors such as heat and stress, or underlying conditions like colds, eye strain, and migraine. While they may be treated with over-the-counter painkillers, some people prefer headache natural treatments because they are easier to process and have fewer side effects.

Headache natural treatments are usually made from plant sources. Medicinal herbs are most effective when fresh, although dried and concentrated forms are also available. However, there is much less regulation on herbal medicines than conventional drugs, so not all headache natural treatments may be safe. Here are some common herbs for treating headaches:

Feverfew

Feverfew is actually a preventive herb, making it ideal for chronic conditions like migraine. Studies suggest that feverfew inhibits the chemicals that cause blood vessels to spasm, which normally triggers migraine headaches. Doctors usually recommend dosages of 100 mg to 250 mg per day.

Peppermint

Peppermint is mainly used for headaches accompanied by fever and nausea. It comes in extract or dried form, but most people prefer tea made from fresh or dried peppermint. However, this can cause adverse reactions in people with hear burn or stomach acid problems.

Passionflower

Passionflower has been found to relieve anxiety and induce sleep. It is also an effective painkiller and anti-inflammatory aid.

Ginkgo

Ginkgo is still being investigated as a headache remedy, but it is widely used to improve brain function and memory. It is commonly found in teas, either alone or combined with other herbs. It should not be used with conventional medications such as lithium and aspirin.

Cayenne

Cayenne peppers contain capsaicin, which appears to increase one’s pain threshold. It can simply be added to food or administered as a nasal spray. It works particularly well against cluster headaches.

Willow

White willow bark works much like aspirin, reducing inflammation and relieving pain. However, it should not be taken long-term and may react negatively with other medications. Check with your doctor before taking willow or any headache natural treatments.

IMPORTANT: Herbal medicines are considered dietary supplements, and thus do not follow the same quality standards as conventional drugs. Some headache natural treatments contain silica, starch, sugar, or gluten, which may be harmful to your health. Avoid products that have artificial colors or flavors. To be safe, look for herbal supplements that are GMP-compliant to make sure they do not contain such additives.
