Omega-3
fatty acids are essential for cardiovascular health and brain development.

1. Coronary artery disease
Coronary artery disease often leads to heart attacks, and remains a major
health risk even when the patient survives. Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce
this risk. It takes about 12 ounces of canned tuna to get one gram of
omega-3, which can cause a shortage of other nutrients. Fish oil nutritional
supplements provide an alternative source of omega-3s, leaving room for a
more balanced diet.
2. High triglyceride levels
Triglycerides are harmful fats that increase the risk of heart disease.
Studies have shown that omega-3s effectively lower triglyceride levels in
the blood. The American Health Association (AHA) recommends taking
supplements of two to four grams per day. However, they should only be taken
by prescription, as risk levels vary with every patient.
3. Auto-immune disorders
Auto-immune disorders include psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis. Omega-3s
block immune responses to reduce the inflammation caused by such conditions.
They are particularly effective at relieving swelling and joint pain in
rheumatoid arthritis. Studies show that a dose of about three grams a day
can help relieve the problem.
Omega-3s also address coronary risk factors such as diabetes and
hypertension, but there is no proof yet that fish oil nutritional
supplements have any significant effects. Experts suggest that such patients
get their omega-3s from fatty fish instead, unless their doctor prescribes
supplements.
REMINDER: The US Food and Drug Administration does not impose strict quality
standards on health supplements. This is why some products may contain
harmful extenders, such as starch, sugar, silica, and gluten. To stay safe,
look for a fish oil supplement that is GMP-compliant. This ensures that the
product contains no such additives. Also, make sure the product does not
contain any artificial colors or flavorings.
