First Signs of Menopause: First Signs of Menopause and Possible Treatments

Learn about the First Signs of Menopause

Let's face it we all get older and our bodies go through all kinds of changes. As a woman, your fertility starts to decrease and eventually will be gone altogether. This is what is often called "The Change" or menopause.

Menopause Defined

Menopause is simply the end of your periods. It is also the end of the time when you can become pregnant and deliver a baby. Though this may be a good thought for many women, there are often accompanying signs and later full blown symptoms that can be troubling. You are said to be in menopause when you have not had your period for a year or longer.

Signs of Menopause

The first signs of menopause can start up to ten years prior to the onset of menopause. In the beginning, you may notice changes in the length of your menstrual periods and some irregularity in their occurrence.

There are the hot flashes and the night sweats that are one of the most dreaded parts of menopause. These occur because as your hormone levels are fluctuating, your body temperature may also be fluctuating. As for the night sweats, they are hot flashes that happen at night.

You might start to have headaches, as well as unexplained fatigue and have very low energy. There might be some weight gain as well. This can be attributed to water retention and also to your changing hormones. You may also have a weaker sex drive as well.

Besides the hot flashes, the erratic mood swings, unexplained irritability are the main reason women seek treatment. Some women will have very mild symptoms while others might have symptoms so severe that they are disabling. Not every woman will experience the same symptoms or the same intensity of symptoms.

Treatments

There are a variety of treatments available. They are physical, pharmaceutical, natural/herbal supplementation and alternative treatments. All treatments are effective; however, many come with negative side effects.

Physical treatments include body massage, dietary adjustments, and yoga. The more in sync your body systems are as you begin to note the first signs of menopause, the easier menopause might be.

Pharmaceutical treatments include Hormone Replacement Therapy. There are two female hormones that have declining levels as menopause progresses. They are Estrogen and Progesterone. Some hormone therapies use estrogen alone, while others use both estrogen and progesterone in a very specific formula. Anti-depressants and anti-inflammatory drugs are often used as well. Anti-depressants can help to balance out mood swings and ease depression. Anti-inflammatories are used to ease the aches and pains that can accompany the first signs of menopause.

Natural/Herbal supplementation is often used as opposed to hormone therapies. The reason is that herbal supplements don't have a lot of side effects if there are any, they are minimal. Top quality herbal supplements will only use standardized herbal extracts. This ensures the same dosage in each capsule and from bottle to bottle. It also helps to guarantee their potency, safety, and effectiveness. They should have been made according to pharmaceutical grade standards and the ingredients' metabolic paths should have been examined at the molecular level and the interaction of the ingredients evaluated.

Conclusion

The first signs of menopause include hot flashes, night sweats, and the mood swings. You will likely experience irregular periods and bleeding. There are treatments including pharmaceutical treatments, physical treatments, and natural/herbal supplements. If you suspect that you or someone close to you is beginning menopause, get to your doctor as soon as possible. This is to rule out anything else that might have similar symptoms.
