B12 Cobalamin - Our Guide

Known as the energy vitamin, Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin) – also called cyanocobalamin — forms a part of the B group of vitamins or the B-complex vitamins.

1. Uses of vitamin B12 (Cobalamin)

B12 (Cobalamin) is essential in the manufacture and maintenance of red blood cells. It also promotes growth, stimulates appetite, and helps release energy. It is the best vitamin for providing an energy boost, speeding up the thought process, and helping prevent mental deterioration (especially for older people). Cobalamin also contributes a lot to the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Conclusive studies have yet to be conducted, but a lot of people are now claiming that B12 helps in clearing up infections and even helps protect against allergies and cancer.

2. Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin) deficiencies

Deficiencies associated with B12 (Cobalamin) can lead to weakness, fatigue, sore tongue, weight loss, apathy, and back pain. Lack of cobalmin can also result to decreased reflexes, loss of balance, ringing in the ears, and tingling of the fingers. B12 deficiency can also increase the level of homocysteine in the blood, which can be toxic to the brain and also said to be contributory to Alzheimer’s disease. Severe B12 deficiency can cause pernicious anemia and the erosion of the myelin sheath—the tissue that insulates the nerve fibers in the body.

The recommended dosage for vitamin B12 (Cobalamin), based on the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), is at 3 mcg per day for both male and female patients.

3. Consequences of high intake

The toxicity of vitamin B12 (Cobalamin) due to very high doses is not established, but people who take vitamin B12 injections in excess may experience skin problems, which can easily be treated by simply stopping the injections. To be safe, consult your doctor before taking extra cobalmin.

4. Sources of B12 vitamins

Vitamin B12 is present in muscle meat, organ meat, shellfish, liver, cheese, eggs, and fish; it can also be manufactured in the body. These vitamins are mostly found in animal products, so if you are on a strict vegan diet, you will probably need supplementation. Keep in mind that while milk contains B12, the vitamin is usually lost during processing.

Vitamin B12 works with calcium, iron, potassium, and sodium. Too much alcohol can impair the absorption of B12.

IMPORTANT: The manufacture and sale of vitamin supplements are not controlled by the Food and Drug Administration. It is advisable to choose a manufacturer that strictly adheres to GMP standards. This assures you that the product does not contain any contaminants and that the ingredients and dosages are the right amount.
